Family Day Schedule and Potluck Details

We finally have an official schedule for college eve and family day.  You can find the full schedule at http://www.ncssm.edu/drupal/sites/default/files/CollegeEveandFamilyDay2010.pdf.  For the potluck, we will have the Dry Lab open at 11am, so that you can drop by and leave your food if you want to (and stay if you do not want to attend the 11:15-12 meeting).  I will be there from 11am-noon getting things set up and ready to go.  We will begin eating around noon so that everyone can get back to following the students schedule by 1pm.
I have heard from several of you about coming, but am still waiting to hear from many of you.  If you have emailed me and I have not responded to you, please email me again.  I will always respond to your emails, so if it has been 24 hours and you haven't heard back from me, let me know.
I look forward to seeing you all this weekend!

Tshirt PreSigning Party

I forgot that I had these pictures on my camera so I just now remembered to post them. These are from the pre-signing party we had on hall before the t-shirt signing dance the first weekend of school.

Supplies for September!

Parents,
Below is a list of supplies we need for the month of September and what they will be used for. Please let me know if you would like to donate any of these items.
I would also like to thank the Johnson family for sponsoring out August birthday break, and thank, in advance, the Brown family for sponsoring our birthday break on the 7th and the Mr. Malcolm for sponsoring out study break on the 21st. If you have questions about sponsoring these breaks, please let me know.

Supplies:
~Decorative paper and large round stickers for the "Make a Flower" activity on the 7th
~Cookies for bedtime stories on the 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th (homemade or store bought)--Donated by the Johnson Family, Zheng Family, and DeJournette Family.  Thanks!
~Food for the family day potluck (I hope ALL of you will come and bring food) I'm so glad you all came!  I had a great time and hope you did too.
~Bubbles for bubble blowing on the lawn on the 12th (we have some but could use extra) Thank you to Denise Addison for donating bubbles for us!
~A LARGE container of vegetable oil, alka-seltzer tablets, and food coloring to make lava lamps on the 21st--Donated by the Houck family.  Thank you!

I believe that is it for now. We are fairly well stocked on hall meeting candy right now thanks to several parent donations, but more is always welcome since candy will keep.
Also remember that if there is ever an activity you would like to facilitate, sponsor, or donate material for, we can add it to the calendar. Let me know if you have ideas.
I hope you all enjoy your weekend!

Hurricane Earl

Parents,
The following email from interim chancellor Dr. Tom Williams was sent earlier to all staff and students regarding the impending hurricane.

NCSSM Community:

As we continue to monitor the forecast and projected path of Hurricane Earl, please know that safety is our primary concern here at NCSSM. We are paying close attention to the progress of the storm, which is currently projected to affect parts of the North Carolina coast sometime on Thursday or Friday. At this time, we do not anticipate any changes in school operation, calendar or plans for the extended Labor Day weekend. We will keep you advised of any changes or updates as the storm progresses.

Parents and families who live in the areas projected to be most severely affected by the storm may grant permission for their children to carpool or stay with other families for the extended weekend. Any alternative travel plans must be approved by the Vice Chancellor for Student Life, Dr. Joan Barber, who can be reached at 919.416.2801 or barber@ncssm.edu

As a reminder, you can view all of NCSSM’s emergency and inclement weather procedures on AlertNCSSM. Please don’t hesitate to contact me personally with any questions or concerns.

Regards,

Dr. Tom Williams
Interim Chancellor

Family Day Potluck

3rd Bryan Parents,
You are all invited to a Family Day hall potluck lunch on Saturday, September 11th. The lunch will begin between 11:30am and noon and will be held in the ETC Dry Lab located on the 2nd floor of the ETC building.  Please send me an email and let me know if you plan to attend and what dish or type of dish (salad, dessert, drink, etc.) you plan to bring.  This information will help us make sure we have enough food and variety for everyone.  I look forward to seeing you all there!

Extended Sign Out

Here is a brief look at how sign out procedures are different for extended then regular sign out.
1. For extended weekends, every student must sign out on the extended sign out sheet posted on the hall door.  This sheet looks like an altered version of the sign out card.  No matter where they are going, who they are going with, or when they will be back, the must sign out on this sheet.
2. If a student is leaving with her parents or if her destination for the weekend is "Home" and she will be back on campus for check the night extended ends, then she does not need extra paperwork, she only need to sign out on the extended sheet.
3. If a students will be going somewhere other than her own home, she needs an overnight permission form which includes a faxed permission letter from parents. The student will also need to sign out at the Bryan SLI office before leaving campus and check back in when she returns to campus.
4. If a student will not be returning to campus until after check on the day extended ends (after 10:30pm Monday, September 6th in this case), then she needs to sign out at the Bryan SLI office before leaving campus and check back in when she returns to campus.
I think that is it.  It is that simple.  Please email me if you have questions about signing out for extended.

Paint Fight Pictures

Here are a couple pictures from our paint fight with Ground Royall, our unofficial sister hall.  For those of you who may be wondering, a paint fight is exactly what it sounds like--you throw paint at one another.  Don't worry though, it all washes out.  :-)
