First Extended

Hi everyone!  The first extended is coming up this weekend.  Residence halls will close at 5pm on Friday, August 30th and reopen Monday, September 2nd at noon.  Students are not allowed back on campus before this time on Monday.  The procedure for signing students out on extended is a little different than normal as well, so please see the information below that explains how sign out procedures are different for extended then regular sign out.
1. For extended weekends, every student must sign out on the extended sign out sheet posted on the hall door.  This sheet looks like an altered version of the sign out card.  No matter where they are going, who they are going with, or when they will be back, the must sign out on this sheet.
2. If a student is leaving with her parents or if her destination for the weekend is "Home" and she will be back on campus for check the night extended ends, then she does not need extra paperwork, she only need to sign out on the extended sheet.
3. If a students will be going somewhere other than her own home, she needs an overnight permission form which includes written permission from parents. The student will also need to sign out at the Bryan SLI office before leaving campus and check back in when she returns to campus.
4. If a student will not be returning to campus until after check on the day extended ends (after 10:30pm Monday, September 2nd, in this case), then she needs to sign out at the Bryan SLI office before leaving campus and check back in when she returns to campus.
I think that is it.  It is that simple.  Please email me if you have questions about signing out for extended.

Week One!

We made it through the first full week of the school year!  So much has happened in one week it is hard to even remember it all.  Let me hit some of the highlights and share a few pictures.

The First Day of Class and Convocation
Convocation always takes place the evening of the first day of classes and officially marks the beginning of the academic year.  The students dress up, the faculty wear their academic regalia, the orchestra plays, there are speeches, and afterwards we all get cookies and punch at the reception.  It is a unique NCSSM tradition that has happened, I think, for as long as the school has been open.  If you want to see the ceremony for yourself, you can watch the whole thing at http://new.livestream.com/ncssmlivestream/convocation2015.  Here are a couple pictures as well.
Hanging with the Chancellor!
Serious...
then silly...
then serious again!

First Hall Loop and Dinner
On Friday, we went on our first hall dinner and loop.  We went to Walmart so that the girls could get snacks, school supplies, t-shirts for the t-shirt signing dance, and anything else they forgot or realized they needed.  Fun was had by all and lots of shopping took place.
We all made it back safe and sound!

T-Shirt Signing Dance
Each year on the first full Saturday, we have the t-shirt signing dance where students wear or carry white t-shirts and get them signed by classmates.  The dance is meant to help students get to know new people, learn names, and have some fun on their first full weekend here.  I think the 3B girls had a great time!  Here are some pictures of our pre-signing party where we decorated our shirts and a few from before we left hall (featuring some guests from 4th Bryan!).

Telephone Outage

3rd Bryan and Families,

My apartment telephone is currently malfunctioning, and I am unable to receive or make phone calls on it.  For the next few days, if you need to contact me, consider sending me an email.  I can still receive voice mail by checking it from a different phone, so if you do need to call, please expect to leave a voice mail and have me return your call at a later time.  As always, if a matter is timely and you cannot get in touch with me, please call the Bryan SLI office at (919) 416-2825.

I am sorry for the inconvenience, and I will keep you all updates about when the phone is going to be repaired.
UPDATE: My phone is back up and working correctly again!  Thanks for your patience.

Hall Fund Donation Information

Below is a letter from our hall parent, Debbie Blew, with information about the hall fund and how to donate. A big thank you to Mrs. Blew for acting as our hall parent this year and to all the parents who donate to the hall fund.

Hi! My name is Debbie Blew and I am excited to be hall mom for 3rd Bryan this year. My daughter is Amy Blew; she is one of the RLAs on hall. I’ll be collecting for the 3rd Bryan Hall Fund. The money is used to help finance activities and supplies for the hall and to help with snacks on hall (weekly bedtime story cookies and snacks for weeks when no one signs up to help). Last year, the hall made trips to the mountains, the state fair, and the zoo along with other places. Fun hall activities included a year-end pool party plus making gingerbread houses, S’mores, and marshmallow snowmen.

There are a several ways you can donate:

1) Mail a check made payable to Debbie Blew (with hall fund in Memo) to:
Debbie Blew
Attn: Hall Fund
135 Sienna Lane
Mooresville, NC 28117

2) Leave your check with Linsey (payable to Debbie Blew) and I’ll get it from her.

3) Use PayPal to send money as a gift to debbieblew@roadrunner.com. Please put ‘hall fund’ in message area.

If you ever need to contact me, you can reach me at debbieblew@roadrunner.com or at 704-660-0443.

How to Update Contact Info in Focus

Hi 3B Families,

Below is a document describing how you update the parent/guardian information in Focus.  Keeping this information up to date and accurate is very important to us so that we can stay in touch with you about your student.  Please take a minute to double check that all of your information is correct and up to date, and if you have any questions, contact me individually or contact Kathleen Allen or Wanda Munn in the registrars office.

PARENT/GUARDIAN CONTACT UPDATES

As a residential school it is crucial to our operations and to your child’s well-being that we have up-to-date parent/guardian contact information (names, addresses, phones, etc.).

Please check your information by logging in to your family FOCUS account. Click on “My Child”, then “Child Info”, then “Addresses and Contacts”. You will see the parent/guardian information we currently have for your child. If there is a split household (parents at different addresses), the individual households will be listed in the upper left of the screen. Click on the arrow „ to the right of the name or household to see additional information.

To correct or to add information, click on “Update My Contact Information” (in blue). Fill in your name and your child’s name and graduation year and the other information requested. Use the “Comments/Notes/Other Information” box for any explanatory or other information that you think will help us understand the changes.

Click “submit” and the information goes to the Registrar’s Office where it is reviewed and then entered to the student record. Someone from the Registrar’s Office may contact you directly if we have questions or need clarification.

There is also a tile for “Update My Contact Information” on my.ncssm.edu.

Hall Calendar

I have attached a copy of the hall calendar for August that lists all the hall activities and some of the campus wide activities that will be taking place in August.  If you click on the picture it will enlarge it so you can read all the activities.  We encourage students to make time for some fun, educational activities in their time here, and this calendar is a great place for them to find those kinds of activities.

We also encourage students to suggest or run their own hall programs and invite parents to come help with or suggest programs as well, so if you have a great idea for a hall activity, please let us know.

Parent/Guardian Information for Athletics

Is your student considering playing a varsity sport this year?  If so, be sure to check out the Parent/Guardian information page on our athletics site at http://www.gounis.com/family.  There is a video attached below featuring our Athletic Director, Greg Jarvis, and our Athletic Trainer, Thomas Michell that will give you a great overview of the athletics program and explain the requirements for eligibility.  For any other questions about athletics, please visit http://gounis.com.
