Miniterm!
Most parents probably know that miniterm is coming up after trimester break, but some of you may still be wondering what exactly miniterm is. Well, this post is for you.
Miniterm is a week and a half period in which students pursue special study options. They may go on a special trip, take a class being offered on campus, or create a project of their own. The opportunities are limitless.* This year, we have classes ranging from hardcore research in math and science and classics such as the Shakespeare class (taught by Miller and Woodmansee) to practical subjects like Introduction to Aviation (a student favorite for years now) to multiple film studies and Broadway Dance. Students can choose to study any area that appeals to them.
For more detailed information, a complete list of classes being offered, and an all around good time, visit the miniterm website at http://www.ncssm.edu/drupal/mini-term.
Now you know everything there is to know about miniterm. Maybe you can even surprise your daughter over trimester break by asking "Did you consider studying "Fangtasia" for miniterm or were you too excited about the "Philosophical Implications of Modern Physics"?
*Opportunities are not really limitless. We in fact have very strict limits about the academic standards of miniterm courses, but you understand what I was going for.

February Calendar
Here is the 3rd Bryan hall calendar for February. We have a LOT going on this month. The powwow on campus this Saturday is a great cultural event that is free for students. We will be having a superbowl party with our brother hall and then will be watching the game in the lecture hall on the big screen this Sunday night. Next weekend, we will be having the Valentine's dance on campus. Then we have exams, trimester break, and miniterm to close out the month. It will be a busy, crazy, fun time for everyone.

Ice Skating
3B went ice skating today. It was lots of fun. Here are some pics. Peitong made us all look bad, but we still all had a great time.

Angel Tree
In looking through some hall pictures on my computer, I realized that I forgot to post the picture of the angel tree items we purchased. Our angel tree child was a 7 year old girl, and we got her some clothes and toys that she had requested. The students did an amazing job donating their own money (and getting some of their parent to offer support as well), and everyone who was able to attend had a wonderful time shopping for the child's wish list items.
I believe that learning to be kind and serve others in our community is an important lesson, and it speaks so well of all the students on 3rd Bryan that they took this project so seriously and were so excited to have this opportunity for service. We are already beginning to look for other service opportunities for the coming months.

List of supplies
Many of the activities we have scheduled for this month either require no supplies or we have the needed supplied. As I mentioned in my email though, we will need some of the usual things like candy for hall meetings and cookies or other snacks for bedtime story.
In addition, we have had a request to do a painting day for arts and crafts and our paint supplies are running low. If anyone would like to donate paints, brushes, paper, or other supplies they would be appreciated.
And last, but not least, we have planned a midnight snack with our brother hall on Jan. 28th, so if anyone would like to donate snacks for that, they would be welcome. Two halls including 30 some teenage boys can put away a lot of food.
Thanks again for your continued support!
