NCSSM World Record Attempt!

After a lot of planning, it is official--NCSSM will be attempting a Guinness World Record!! Specifically, we will be trying to break the record for the most food collected in a 24 hour period at a single location (that location being NCSSM).
This all started with Reynolds 1E2E2D. Their hall theme for this year was records. As part of that theme they had the idea to try and break a world record. After a lot of initial ideas that got tossed out, they finally settled on this attempt which will not only let them break a record, but will also help the needy in NC. Earlier this week, they received notification that their proposal to be considered as an official world record has been accepted.
There is still a lot of planning to be done on this event, but what we know so far is that it is set for March 20th and will be a BIG event. The current record to break is 509,147 lbs. That is an almost unfathomable amount of food, but it is also needed. For this project, we have partnered with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC and according to their statistics there are 481,515 people are at risk of hunger in the 34 NC counties they serve. There will also be an official NCSSM Food Drive website coming online at the end of this week. I will post more information and updates as I know more about this exciting project.

Coming Up!

We have a lot of small events planned for January, but our big event for this month is that we will be going ice skating and sledding on Sunday, January 17th. We will be going to the downtown Raleigh Winterfest ice skating rink. They have outdoor ice skating and on that Sunday they are doing a special event with a company called Snow My Yard to provide sledding as well. If any parents want to come join us in Raleigh, you are more than welcome!
One other note about January: I would like to thank the DeNunzio family for volunteering to sponsor the birthday break this month, but we still have not had anyone volunteer to sponsor the study break this month. If you have been meaning to sign up as a sponsor and just haven't gotten around to it yet, here is your chance. Or if you have already sponsored a break but enjoyed it so much you want to do it again, please let me know.

What's Happening

Long ago I promised updates about some of the events we had on hall and in the business of winter break and traveling I never got those posted. In light of that, I will post several things tonight talking about past events, upcoming events, and other news. I will try to keep my posts a little more regular from now on.

December was a hectic month both on and off campus, but we had a lot of fun around campus before leaving (a day early) for a nice long break. In addition to the hall potluck which I mentioned before, we also had the campus wide semi-formal dance and our Angel Tree charity project.
As you can tell from the pictures below, semi-formal gives everyone on campus a chance to get all spiffed up and looking nice. Most of the students make special effort to look their best and have a great time together. In addition to just going to the dance, the girls on hall also had a semi-formal fashion show on Friday night before the dance to make sure their outfits were just right and a getting ready party where they helped one another do hair and make-up and put on just the right finishing touches.Another hall event from December is the Angel Tree charity project we did. If you have never heard of Angel Tree, it is a program sponsored by the Salvation Army that provides needy children clothes and toys they may not otherwise get over the holidays. As a hall we choose to sponsor 2 children--and 11 year old girl named Janet who asked for purses, a bike, and nail polish, and an 8 year old boy named Reynaldo Jr. who asked for monopoly, twister, and cars. As a hall we not only got each of the children the dream gifts that they requested, but got them clothes and other small gifts as well. Below are pictures of the items we purchased.
I was immensely impressed with the way the girls on hall handled this project. They were very excited to be helping out others, and, despite our limited funds, the girls were determined to get everything on both of the children's lists-even the bike which was a little pricey. I think the girls did a wonderful job with this charity project and it made all of us appreciate the things that we have.
One last December activity I want to mention is our hall stress relief pillow fight. The girls organized this activity and seemed to have a great time with it. We are, in fact, planning another one for this month.

Thank You!

I have been remiss in getting out some very important thank yous for December. In the 2 short weeks we were here in December we did a lot. I would like to thank the Seitzers for sponsoring our lovely birthday break. The girls enjoy getting to have these celebrations together on hall, and I couldn't do them without your help. I would also like to thank all the parents who helped out with the potluck in early December and especially the O'Briens who were kind enough to organize this special event. Though many people weren't able to attend, those who came had a great meal. And last I would like to thank the Guptas for sending treats to all the girls on hall before break. They also sent oranges which we shared with our brother hall when we went caroling. Thanks again to all the parents on hall for helping out as much as you do.
